MELOEN
Fresh greens
in the middle
of the ocean.
Sailors crossing an ocean live for weeks on tins and dry food. Meloen is a hydroponics planter that lets them grow fresh microgreens on board.
I did all of it myself: the use case, the design, the fabrication method and the making. It was shown at Habitare in Helsinki in September 2026 and is selected for the student showcase at Stockholm Furniture Fair in February 2027.
A boat is a hostile kitchen
Four constraints shaped every decision:
- HeelThe boat leans. Water must not slosh out.
- SaltSalt spray eats most materials.
- PowerNo electricity to spare. No pumps, no lights.
- SpaceEvery centimetre on board is contested.
How does the design handle heeling? Gimbal, wicking, reservoir shape? 2–3 sentences.
CNC moulds, thermoformed HI-MACS, invisible joints
HI-MACS is a solid-surface material: non-porous, salt-proof and repairable by sanding. I CNC-milled my own moulds, heated the sheets and thermoformed them over the moulds, then bonded the parts with HI-MACS adhesive so the joints disappear.
Stainless steel for everything that carries load. Nothing on it should rust, crack or need a plug.
