3D-printing “wood”
from 100% bio-based
paste, instead
of concrete.

The TU/e architecture department asked for a sustainable alternative to concrete printing. We answered by developing our own printable paste from lignin, methylcellulose and fibres, and building the printer to test it.

01 / The machine

We couldn’t buy the printer, so we built it

I led the design engineering of a paste extrusion printer able to push a thick, fibrous bio-paste reliably, and tuned the paste and the machine against each other.

02 / The team

Leading people who don’t speak the same language

I managed a multidisciplinary team of designers, architects, engineers and data scientists. We found sponsors, competed in innovation contests such as the TU/e contest, and designed housing for our own material with feedback from construction companies.
